What Is a Double Chin?
A double chin can mean something different depending on the individual. It is frequently described as multiple folds of soft tissue immediately under the chin and jawline, particularly evident when the neck is flexed, and the chin is pulled down towards the chest. A double chin could also refer to any fullness under the jawline. A double chin is often interpreted as a sign of aging, because the angle between the jawline and the neck, called the cervicomental angle, becomes blunted or more obtuse.
What Causes a Double Chin?
The potential causes of a double chin include:
- Excess subcutaneous fat in the space between the jawline and skin, called the submentum.
- Hanging neck muscle, called the platysma muscle, that can fall in one or more ropey bands.
The former is caused primarily by weight gain. The latter is primarily caused by age, though significant, rapid weight loss can make it much more apparent quickly.
What Can a Double Chin Be Confused With?
A double chin can be confused with a weak chin, which can be treated with:
In fact, historically, plastic surgeons would place chin implants to make the neck appear more youthful despite not having addressed age-related changes in the neck itself. This approach is not advised today.
How Is a Double Chin Treated?
A double chin is treated differently depending on its cause. Excess fat in the submentum and neck is treated using liposuction. Platysmal banding is treated with a deep neck lift. The procedures are performed together in rare instances when both features are contributing to a double chin.
